In the wee hours of the morning of August 4 anarchist settlers used a ketchup bottle to apply red metal paint to a statue of John Galt in front of City Hall. August 4 was Guelph’s first ever John Galt Day. The town was awash in festivities and celebrations honouring John Galt and the plan he developed for the founding of the city of Guelph back in 1827. But who is this John Galt character? read full story / add a comment

Calling all radicals, anarchists and community organizers! We are in the early stages of organizing a conference and community forum to be held in Ottawa this fall. The tentative date for the conference is Oct 24-26, 2008. The conference will feature workshops, panel discussions, and tables by community groups. It will be an opportunity for community members and those active in social justice and radical movements to network and learn from one another. This conference represents the next step following the three Anarchist Assemblies held in 2007. We are hoping to build on the momentum and the successes of the Assemblies while becoming more inclusive in bringing in others involved in community development and organizing. read full story / add a comment
May 1 has a special significance for the labour and anarchist movements. In almost every country of the world, except for Canada and the U.S., it is observed as International Workers' Day. Ironically, the observance of May 1 has its origins in the struggle for the eight-hour day in Canada and the US. read full story / add a comment

The actions of those in the anti-CANSEC march were completed with the smashing of the windows of the Army Recruitment Centre on Slater St. While others showed their solidarity with "Alex", arrested arbitrarily by the police, by making a presence at the police station, we chose to show ours in the night by attacking the system itself. In an act of opposition to this heavyhandedness of the state, the windows of the Army Recruitment Centre on Slater St. and the Scotiabank on Elgin St. were smashed on the night of Thursday April 10th. The morning of Thursday April 10th, a black bloc was called together to "shut down" CANSEC (secrity and weapons fair) and attack the system it expands. From the beginning of the demonstration an overwhelming police presence was mobilized to intimidate our small bloc. national / anarchism / news report Friday March 14, 2008 20:37 by Aragorn!
It's easy enough to hedge about politics. It comes naturally and most of the time the straight answer isn't really going to satisfy the questioner, nor is it appropriate to fix our politics to this world, to what feels immovable. Politics, like experience, is a subjective way to understand the world. At best it provides a deeper vocabulary than mealy-mouthed platitudes about being good to people, at worst (and most commonly) it frames people and ideas into ideology. Ideology, as we are fully aware, is a bad thing. Why? Because it answers questions better left haunting us, because it attempts to answer permanently what is temporary at best. read full story / add a comment

On Sunday February 3rd in Guelph Ontario the offices of Eston Mfg, LPP Mfg, and Comtech Mfg were graffitied, postered and had their locks glued shut. A Re-Max office nearby was also the target of graffiti, glued locks, and had windows smashed. These actions are a continuation of a fight against Linamar's involvement in the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP). The SPP is a free trade agreement that deals with militarizing and unifying the borders of North America to enable capitalist exploitation and stranglehold reprerssion on levels never before seen. read full story / add a comment

Source: http://ottawa.indymedia.org/en/2008/01/6745.shtml During the night of January 27, 2008, bricks found their way through the windows of the Elgin St. Royal Bank of Klanada in Ottawa. You may be wondering why... This happened in opposition and resistance to the Corporate Circus known as the 2010 Winter Olympics. These actions are in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples, the poor, and all those who are made to suffer in the name of "Security and Prosperity", the G-8, and the Olympics on stolen land. The ratification of the Security and Prosperity Partnership, the upcoming G-8 summit in Canada, and the Olympics are set to happen in the year 2010, and we thus declare war on all the year represents and all who sponsor it!!! read full story / add a comment

Anarchism as Co-optation A critique of Cindy Milstein’s “education for freedom” Cindy Milstein (co-organizer of the annual Renewing the Anarchist Tradition conference, board member with the Institute for Anarchist Studies, member of the Free Society Collective and Black Sheep Books collective; Montpelier, Vermont) gave the Wednesday unScooling Oppression conference plenary talk entitled “Education for Freedom” in Ottawa. Milstein’s talk upset many anarchists in the audience because her described approach to social justice activism appeared to be counter to anarchism principles while claiming to be grounded in the anarchist tradition. read full story / add a comment

The Anarchist Assembly is intended to bring together anarchists from
the Ottawa-Outaouais area to link past, present and future organizing. First, there will be a short presentation from people who took part in the Catapult Collective in 2005. They will give their perspectives on what worked, what didn’t and what we can learn from this. This presentation is part of the Assembly’s efforts to learn from the successes and failures of past organizing. If you have ideas for other Ottawa anarchist projects that could be reflected on, contact us at: oaa@roadnetwork.org read full story / add a comment
