The "U.S. Embassy Defense & Security Exhibition" is one segment of a large military trade show called "Secure Canada 2008" now scheduled for Lansdowne Park (Sept.30 - Oct.1). This whole event flies in the face of a near-unanimous Ottawa Council motion from 1989 stating "that Lansdowne Park and other city facilities not be leased to ARMX or other such arms exhibitions." ARMX was Canada's largest military trade show. It sparked a public furor in 1989 when Ottawa's Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) was formed to expose this manifestation of the military-industrial complex. COAT organized a large campaign culminating in a protest of some 4,000 citizens at Lansdowne's gates. read full story / add a comment

Calling all radicals, anarchists and community organizers! We are in the early stages of organizing a conference and community forum to be held in Ottawa this fall. The tentative date for the conference is Oct 24-26, 2008. The conference will feature workshops, panel discussions, and tables by community groups. It will be an opportunity for community members and those active in social justice and radical movements to network and learn from one another. This conference represents the next step following the three Anarchist Assemblies held in 2007. We are hoping to build on the momentum and the successes of the Assemblies while becoming more inclusive in bringing in others involved in community development and organizing. read full story / add a comment

The U.S. Embassy has scheduled a huge arms bazaar at Lansdowne Park this fall, despite an Ottawa City Council Motion of 1989 that banned all future military trade shows from municipal property. If it goes ahead, the "U.S. Embassy Defense & Security Exhibition" (Sept. 30 - Oct.1) will be the first weapons expo on Ottawa City property since May 23-25, 1989, when ARMX—Canada's largest military exposition of that time—filled Ottawa's Lansdowne Park. read full story / add a comment

**please note that circumstances on the ground continue to change constantly, so full updates are not possible at this time ** April 28, 2008: After a tense exchange this morning, in which the OPP informed Mohawk spokesperson Jason Maracle to get people out of the area or they would come in, the OPP instead disbanded a Mohawk roadblock erected on the perimetre of the reclaimed quarry site. This psychological warfare on the part of the police resulted in a tense face-off between the OPP and community members. At present, the OPP has removed one of the roadblocks on the Slash Road and pulled back, but remains present in the direct vicinity of the quarry in great numbers. At the centre of the dispute is the Culbertson Tract, land which rightfully belongs to the Mohawks of Tyendinaga. Community members have been occupying a gravel quarry site for over a year. read full story / add a comment

Source: http://www.anarchistnews.org/?q=node/3662 In the early morning of friday april 25th 3 Bell vans had their tires (12 of them) slashed. We hope to express our solidarity with those fighting the implementation of capitalist expansion everywhere. From Tyendinaga to the occupied territories out west. The 2010 olympics (and SPP, both of which Bell sustains) is a symptom of capitalism and it spreads development, militaristic security and a tupperware disneyland of wealth for the rich atop the lives and lands of the poor and dispossessed it swallows. Let's deepen our resistance to the 2010 SPP meeting, G8 and Olympics through local struggles and wherever their repressive structures and technology is implemented and developed! read full story / add a comment

What happened - How you can help - – Needs of Mohawks - Contacts of cops and politicians MNN. Apr. 27, 2008. An email came from the real estate agents, Emile and Theodore Nibourg, enibourg@sutton.com. These are the guys who wanted to build condos on Mohawk land, or at least they wanted to make it look like they were building condos. They knew the Mohawks would object. They even told some of us they were hoping to get a pay out guaranteeing their profits from Canadian taxpayers when the deal fell through. What a scam! The “OPP” [who help the thieves of “Other Peoples Property”] fell for it hook, line and sinker. These are Nibourg’s puppets. You can practically see the strings. In a press statement Nibourg said, “We sent out a media release last week stating we are refraining from continuing our plans to develop the land to allow for a peaceful resolution and negotiations with the government”. read full story / add a comment

MNN. April 22, 2008, 7:00 EDT. Congratulations! Mohawks of Tyendinaga! You made the colonial apparatus show their true colors! We stopped the construction and no one got hurt. We wouldn’t have the evidence if we hadn’t stood up to colonial lawlessness. Nothing’s changed since Ipperwash! It might even have gotten worse. The Mohawks used traditional guerilla tactics. We’re there! Then we’re not there! The OPP had no one to hit. So they left. read full story / add a comment

The actions of those in the anti-CANSEC march were completed with the smashing of the windows of the Army Recruitment Centre on Slater St. While others showed their solidarity with "Alex", arrested arbitrarily by the police, by making a presence at the police station, we chose to show ours in the night by attacking the system itself. In an act of opposition to this heavyhandedness of the state, the windows of the Army Recruitment Centre on Slater St. and the Scotiabank on Elgin St. were smashed on the night of Thursday April 10th.
