Inspired by the mobilizing on the West Coast, organizers across "Canada" have begun awareness-raising efforts. Building on the call from the West Coast for anti-capitalist and anti-colonial resistance to the Olympics, some organizers affiliated with the "People's Global Action" Bloc (PGA-Bloc) in Ontario and Quebec have begun mobilizing around "Resistance2010", linking anti-Olympics efforts to organizing against the G8 and SPP, and the day-to-day systems and institutions of power and oppression they represent.

The "U.S. Embassy Defense & Security Exhibition" is one segment of a large military trade show called "Secure Canada 2008" now scheduled for Lansdowne Park (Sept.30 - Oct.1). This whole event flies in the face of a near-unanimous Ottawa Council motion from 1989 stating "that Lansdowne Park and other city facilities not be leased to ARMX or other such arms exhibitions."

ARMX was Canada's largest military trade show. It sparked a public furor in 1989 when Ottawa's Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) was formed to expose this manifestation of the military-industrial complex. COAT organized a large campaign culminating in a protest of some 4,000 citizens at Lansdowne's gates. read full story / add a comment

On Sunday, July 27th, anti-fascists ("antifa") came together from across Southern Ontario to confront and shut down an attempt by long time hate organizers to intimidate the participants of London's 2008 Pride Parade. Acting on information found posted on white supremacist websites, antifa in several cities were able to organize and produce the numbers despite minimal preparation time. read full story / add a comment

Calling all radicals, anarchists and community organizers! We are in the early stages of organizing a conference and community forum to be held in Ottawa this fall. The tentative date for the conference is Oct 24-26, 2008. The conference will feature workshops, panel discussions, and tables by community groups. It will be an opportunity for community members and those active in social justice and radical movements to network and learn from one another.

This conference represents the next step following the three Anarchist Assemblies held in 2007. MNN. July 20, 2008. Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino’s fascistic actions against Indigenous people are not new. His illegal dirty tricks to trap Mohawks and Shawn Brant in particular have been developed and practiced in cop training school. He’s following an old pattern. Really old. Cops are basically well-paid thugs. We’ve seen some of the police training videos. Police are trained to instigate violence.

Way back in the Winnipeg Workers Strike in 1917 the police were found to be responsible for the violence. In relations with the Ongwehonwe, it is once again armed state forces, police or military that have caused violence and deaths time and time again. Remember the Mohawk Oka Crisis in Kanehsatake in 1990, Gustafsen Lake in B.C. in 1995, the killing of Dudley George at Ipperwash, and all of the recent confrontations at Six Nations and Tyendinaga! The U.S. Embassy has scheduled a huge arms bazaar at Lansdowne Park this fall, despite an Ottawa City Council Motion of 1989 that banned all future military trade shows from municipal property. If it goes ahead, the "U.S. Embassy Defense & Security Exhibition" (Sept. 30 - Oct.1) will be the first weapons expo on Ottawa City property since May 23-25, 1989, when ARMX—Canada's largest military exposition of that time—filled Ottawa's Lansdowne Park. read full story / add a comment

MNN. July 16, 2008. Canada ’s military build-up is meant to try to attack “people of color” world wide, steal our resources and eliminate our population. There is a big recruitment campaign for Indigenous youth going on. They want 20% of the armed forces to be native. That way it will look like we approve of what they are doing. No money to heal. No money to educate. No money to pay the debt to Indigenous people. But money to kill!

The U.S. inspired "Canada First Defence Strategy" (CFDS) is basically written from a capitalistic economic viewpoint. No thought has been given to sustainable development. Canadians don’t support the military buildup. The "Strategy" is an aggressive profit-driven scheme designed to benefit career soldiers and industry.

On Monday, July 7, around supper time, a young Somali man in his mid- twenties was found dead in the Salvation Army Maxwell Meighen Hostel. On Thursday morning, July 10, Denis Bowen, 42, a native man known to many of us in the community, died outside a social housing building at 200 Sherbourne St.

MNN. July 14, 2008. 10:40 a.m. This morning the Brantford City police arrested a Six Nations Indigenous person at the construction site at Fenn Ridge in Brantford. At the same time Ontario Provincial Police are gathering on Highway 403, making way for cement trucks to enter the illegal construction site. More cruisers are arriving on the scene. They have laid spike belts on the road to keep Indigenous people on the outside. Ambulances and paddy wagons are arriving. There are men, women and children inside the site gates. On Friday, July 11th, while participating in the local Summerfest activities on Front Street in downtown Belleville, an officer with Belleville Police Services was seen approaching numerous stores and street artists clutching a copy of a newspaper dedicated to radical street art and graffiti. This officer, Todd Bennett, was heard by OU staff to say that if anyone knew who the “asshole” was who was distributing this literature the police were to be contacted.

This particular newspaper was displayed on a table in front of the cafe along with political buttons, honey, fair trade coffee, chocolate, patches and Marxist and Anarchist literature. read full story / add a comment

Today’s activities have been initiated by a local group called Sudbury Against War and Occupation (SAWO). We are a mixed group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous folks concerned with all forms and consequences of war and occupation. While this includes working against Canadian involvement in war and occupation all over the world, SAWO sees it as central to recognize that Canada itself exists as an occupation of First Nations’ territory and that struggles of Indigenous Peoples against that occupation must be supported. There is an urgent need to support communities standing up for their lands and for their sovereignity and understand how non-indigenous people are a part of and contribute to the continuing violations of that soveriegnity. Mohawk activist of Tyendinaga, Shawn Brant, called for a different way of doing things on National Aboriginal Day last year when he cried out: “We bury our children in this country every day. We have to force them to drink polluted water. We’re sick and tired of it. It’s going to end-June 29 is going to mark the time when First Nations people are going to be in a different relationship with the rest of the country.” read full story / add a comment

Today we went to City Hall to demand that Mayor David Miller immediately restore shelter beds in the downtown east side. We've lost over 350 shelter beds in the downtown core, and tens of thousands of meals over the past year, and the City has done nothing.

"On the night of May 29th, the night before the supreme court of kkkanada looks at passing a bill that would illegalize the presence of natives at construction sites in Brantford Ontario (furthering the control of indigenous people and the colonization of their land), we attacked the office (at 803 St. Clair west) of MPP Michael Bryant. The office windows and door were smashed and jars filled with paint were thrown inside. This was a small message of our discontent and contempt for this minister of aboriginal affairs. The only reason he still has an office to clean is because it is below residential apartments. Way to hide behind human shields you sneaky bastard!

The mayor of Brantford Ontario Canada, Mike Handcock has requested military forces to silence impending Native protests. The issue is the development of sovereign land owned by the Six Nations. Though non Native documents foretell of an agreed land acquisition, Native history disputes this land deal dating back to January 18, 1841. According to Six Nations, back then the chiefs were coerced, deceived and intimidated into signing away the land in question. This has been common practice by settlers since time immemorial. Now, the local government of Brantford wishes to raise the stakes by implementing the use of Canadian military forces. read full story / add a comment
